Joined the 70th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Adams Co. as a private, Oct. 1861; commissioned 2nd lieutenant, served at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge. Promoted to captain before the Atlanta Campaign; seriously wounded at Ezra Church, July 28, 1864; two months later rejoined Sherman's March to Savannah and through the Carolinas to war's end. Came to Logansport in 1866; practiced law. Married Cornelia Mary Cheney, Nov. 30, 1871. Elected Circuit Court Judge in 1877; elected Mayor, 1887/88, ran unsuccessfully for Congress (Dem.) in 1902. Appointed to the Board of Managers of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in 1915, he later served as 1st vice president, and endowed a library at the Marion, IN branch of the NHDVS.
