Wilmington, North Carolina - Joseph Eugene Bartholomew, Sr.
April 26, 1935 - June 6, 2023

J. Eugene "Gene" Bartholomew, Sr, 88, of Wilmington, longtime resident of Raleigh and later Wake Forest, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. He was born on April 26, 1935, in Raleigh to the late Lewis and Ila Yates Bartholomew.

Gene was a graduate of Hugh Morson High School and a proud 1958 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. He was married to his high school sweetheart, the late Kathryn Newton Bartholomew, for over 63 years prior to her death in August 2021.

Gene worked his way through high school and college to get his degree in business. He was a proud member of the Army National Guard and worked for the State of NC for 37 years. Most of his career was spent in the Revenue Dept, DMV or DOT. Gene retired in 1997 as the Assistant Controller for DOT. He was awarded the state's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, for his service and dedication.

Gene is survived by his son, Joseph E. Bartholomew Jr, (Joey), his wife, Anne Margaret; his grandson, Joseph E. Bartholomew III (Tripp), his wife Abby, their daughter Audrey; his granddaughter, Kathryn B. Nolan, her husband Cleveland, their sons Nash and Landon; another son, Brett D. Bartholomew and his girlfriend, Shannon Bostic, and very dear friends Bob Mooneyham, Marie Clay, and William & Joann Tilley.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Melvin, Lewis, and John Bartholomew, and sisters Mary Goodwin and Evelyn Sealey. His classmates and friends from high school remained among his most loyal and devoted friends for his life.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 10th at New Hope Baptist Church, 4301 Louisburg Rd, Raleigh NC. Visitation will begin at 1pm, with the service following at 2pm. Interment will follow the service in the church columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Hope Baptist Church or the charity of one's choice.
