A one-vehicle accident claimed the lives of four young Buckhannon women while a fifth passenger remained in stable condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital Sunday evening.

Upshur County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Mike Kelley said Hannah Laurel Browning, 18, Lindsey Jenell Rose, 19, Shasta Teara Rutledge-Andrick, 18, and 17-year-old Anna Rae Wamsley died in the Saturday afternoon accident.

A fifth passenger, April Lynn Zickefoose, 17, was life-flighted to Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Browning was driving a 2005 Ford pick-up truck east on the Gaines Road when she lost control in a left-hand curve, according to reports from the sheriff's department and Buckhannon detachment of the State Police.

Kelley said Sunday that the vehicle slid down a small incline and landed on its side. The top of the cab then crashed into a tree.

The state police report said all five passengers had to be extricated.

Excessive speed may have been a contributing factor, according to Kelley.

"In motor vehicle accidents, we always check for alcohol," he said. "The investigation is ongoing."

It may be two to three weeks before test results are returned, Kelley added.

Upshur County Schools will be operating on a two-hour delay today, according to Superintendent Dr. Charles Chandler. During that time, staff and administrators will meet for a briefing session on how to handle the tragedy and provide counseling to students.

"We've been very blessed with people volunteering," Chandler said. "We will have counselors available."

A vigil was also held Sunday night at the high school. The superintendent described the event as a "remembrance of who these girls were" that was followed by a candlelight vigil.

"The best thing is just to be together," Chandler said.

Sgt. Marshall Powers with the Upshur County Sheriff's Department was the investigating officer for the accident.

He was assisted by 1st Sgt. Rick Holley and Sgt. Chris Smith of the West Virginia State Police and Corporal Rodney Rolenson with the sheriff's department.

Upshur County EMS also responded along with firefighters from Adrian, Banks District and Walkersville volunteer fire departments.

Andrick, Browning and Wamsley were students at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. Rose was a student at Fairmont State University.
