Dorothy B. (McCormick) Beachnau, 91, of Lansing MI passed away May 28, 2023.
Born April 2, 1932, in Gays Mills WI, Dorothy was the third of eight children born to Joseph W. and Mary (Honer) McCormick. Raised in the Viroqua WI area, she was a 1950 Graduate of Viroqua High School. Following that, she attended the St. Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse WI, to become a Registered Nurse, graduating September 3, 1953. She married Robert E. (Bob) Beachnau, in Coon Valley on October 10, 1953 and they settled in his hometown of Lansing MI.
Five children and 14 years later Dorothy joined the Labor and Delivery Staff at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. She worked for two years, took two years off during which child number 6 was born, then she returned to St. Lawrence for another 24 ½ years. Part of what she credited for her longevity as a Nurse, was working in what she felt was normally "The Happiest Department" in the Hospital. She was voted "1995 Nurse of the Year" by her co-workers in Women's Health Services (L&D, Post-Partum, Nursery, Women's Health Unit). She retired from St. Lawrence Hospital later in 1995.
The annual family vacation for many years was the two-week trip so Dorothy could be among her family and see her Nursing friends in Wisconsin. We visited Madison, Beloit, Boscobel, LaCrosse, among others, but the family stayed with her Mom and Dad in Coon Valley.
She was always involved with her children, guiding and helping each according to their needs. She tutored when there was a problem with homework and assisted with our school projects. She taught sewing to some, laundry, cooking, painting and wallpapering to others as we became homeowners and then parents ourselves. And, after practicing all this as a working Mom, she excelled as a Grandma.
Dorothy and Bob were members of Holy Cross Parish in Lansing until its' closing in 2009. They both built many strong friendships there, she assisting with funeral lunches, and they, while participating in Church and School functions and activities. They became members of St. Gerard Parish after the closing of Holy Cross. Bob's health declined in 2009 and 2010, Dorothy was his primary caregiver, in their home, until his passing in June of 2010. After Bob died, Dorothy lived independently, in the apartment of her choosing, until her passing.
Dorothy was preceded in death by parents Joe and Mary McCormick; by her husband of 56 years, Robert; by her brothers Pete (Dee), Jerome (Lois), and Pat McCormick, her sister Anne Curtis and many in-laws and friends.
Dorothy is survived by 2 brothers and 1 sister, her 6 grateful children, 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Sparrow Home Hospice for their assistance and guidance regarding Dorothy's recent care.
