Joseph B. Hartz was a retired rubber worker, and the husband of Mertie L. Haish Hartz.

He was a son of Ohio native Charles R. Hartz and Pennsylvania native Mary Winkelman Hartz of Canal Fulton, Ohio.

Joseph, age 6, was at home in Stow, Summit Co. Ohio, with parents and brother Perry, age 9, in 1880.

He married Mertie L. Haish in 1893; they were the parents of Garda E. 5, Ruth 3, and William age 1, living in Coventry, Summit Co. in 1900.

1910 census has the family living in Akron Ward 7, Summit Co. with additional children Mary age 4, and Nellie age 1.

In 1920 Joseph and Mertie were at home in Akron with children Mary, age 13, Nellie, age 11, Floyd, age 9, Eva, age 7, and Richard, age 3 6/12.

Joseph was a widower in 1930, his children at home on Whitney Avenue were: William J. age 32, a bookkeeper at a coal company, Nellie M. age 21, a laborer at an oats factory, Eva E. age 17, Richard J. age 13, and lodger Frank Hyre 28, a laborer in a rubber shop from West Virginia.

Joseph's paternal grandparents were
Philip Hartz and Margaret (Ginter) Hartz.
