West Union is in far NE Iowa 76 mi due north of Cedar Rapids. His father was a commercial salesman of mechanical grain separators. He had two sisters, Thelma born in 1897 and Ruth born in 1900. On his Apr 1917 draft registration Harold is a 22 year old grocery clerk.
