James was the son of John and Sarah Elmore. He was 28 years old when he enlisted in Company H 30th Alabama Infantry at St. Clair County, Alabama March 20,1862. He was captured at Champion Hill May 16,1863 and died a POW in a hospital at Fort Delaware.
