Bellhop Is Charged Here In Slaying Of Ex-Wife
Police filed a murder charge yesterday against a Los Angeles bellhop whose former wife was found shot to death in her gas-filled Phoenix apartment Tuesday.
The charge against Joseph Henry Addington, 50, an employe of the Los Angeles Biltmore, was filed before Justice of the Peace Charles Coppock (memorial # 209329369 ) .
Addington is still at large, police said.
He was charged with murdering Mrs. Carmen Pedrin, 46, Phoenix jewelry store clerk and mother-in- law of Pancho Gonzales (memorial # 6534625 ) of Los Angeles, world's champion professional tennis player.
"Jealousy was the motive," said Capt. Orme Morehead (memorial # 1010568 ) , Phoenix chief of detectives.
He said acquaintances told police Mrs. Pedrin told them Addington had threatened to kill her because she had remarried her first husband, Eugene Pedrin of Los Angeles after divorcing Addington.
Five weeks ago, Morehead said an acquaintance related, Mrs. Pedrin said Addington came to Phoenix, showed her a gun, and told her he would kill her and anyone he found with her.
Signing of the first degree murder complaint by Sgt. Kenneth Haist (memorial # 203259089 ), police investigator, will enable police to enlist aid of the FBI in the search for the bellhop.
Morehead said Phoenix residents placed Addington in Phoenix during the hours that Dr. Daniel J. Condon (memorial # 513266 ), county medical examiner, said Mrs. Pedrin was shot twice in the head. The last apparent trace of him, according to Morehead, was when he tried to buy an airline ticket for Modesto, Calif., at Sky Harbor shortly before 7 p.m. Monday.
Two American Airlines dispatchers, Richard C. Johnson and Robert E. Hill, said they were "pretty sure he was the man they refused to sell a ticket because he wat too drunk," Morehead related.
The airport it only a dozen or so blocks from where Mrs. Pedrin's body was found In bed at her apartment at 2123 E. Washington.
Gas spewed from an unlit wall heater.
Dr. Condon placed the time of death "roughly" between 3:30 and 9:30 p.m. Monday. Captain Morehead said Addington asked for the holiday weekend off from work to come to Phoenix and visit relative.
But he didn't call on his sister and mother here.
He arrived at Sky Harbor by air about 1 a.m. Monday and took a taxlcab to Mrs. Pedrin's apartment court, starting toward her apartment in the rear as the cab drove away, police said.
Addington was described as of small build, 5 feet 6 inches, about 135 pounds, light brown hair, partly bald, blue eyes, and ruddy complexion.
Mrs. Pedrin clerked in the Gem Jewelry and Loan store at 138 W, Washington.
Her husband, Eugene, whom she divorced and then remarried after ending her marriage to Addington, returned to his Los Angeles home last night, escorting her body.
Besides the wife of Tennis Star Gonzales, (Henrietta Pedrin) she is survived by two sons.
One lives in Los Angeles.
The other Is stationed with the Air Force In Tacoma, Wash.
