Army Sergeant David Michael Solinas Jr., 23, of Oradell, was called to the Lord's home mid-flight on an Army medevac training mission on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.

He was with the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, KY when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed.

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is the only air assault division of the United States Army. Nicknamed as the "Screaming Eagles," the 101st has consistently distinguished itself by demonstrating the highest standards of military professionalism since its activation at one minute after midnight on Sunday, August 16, 1942. Three days later, the first commander, Major General William C. Lee, promised his new recruits that although the new division had no history, it would soon have a "rendezvous with destiny." As a division, the 101st has never failed that prophecy. The 101st is recognized for its ability to execute any combat or contingency mission anywhere in the world, and is still proving its mettle as "tomorrow's division in today's Army."

David was the second oldest of four boys, who all shared a very strong and unique bond. Over the last 23 years there were barely any arguments and almost no physical fights. They spent their younger days playing in dirt, fishing, kayaking and enjoying many family adventures. Catching frogs and snakes, making s'mores and star gazing filled most of their summers. Home was loud with laughter, and sounds of dinosaurs, FIFA and eventually COD. Their relationships developed in many different ways, but their bonds grew stronger through Saint Joseph and ASCPG youth groups, scouting trips, soccer and wrestling. These memories are blessings, frozen and unblemished in time.

Beginning at the age of three, David believed he was Spider Man and truly lived out his dream of following in his super hero's footsteps. The 101st gave David the opportunity to swing through the sky on a cable as a flight medic, and the 82nd trained him to be a paratrooper medic. Ironically, David hated heights.

David was a 2018 alumni of River Dell High School, where he played rugby and wrestling. He attended Norwich University in Vermont prior to joining the Army.

From a young age, David always brought smiles and laughter to whatever space he was in. Whether it be scouting, soccer, wrestling, or church; David always brought nothing but pure drive and commitment to everything he did, including his career in the United States Army. David was deeply committed to a life of service to his community and his country, affording him opportunities to pursue a lifestyle that most could only dream of. In his short 23 years, David accomplished what most dream of; exploring the land through extensive travel, the air through his time with the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions, and the sea with his SCUBA license. David was currently finishing up his degree and planned on attending nursing school.

He is survived by his devoted and proud parents, David and Ellen Solinas. Dear brother of Stephen, Brendan and Aidan Solinas. Cherished grandson of Hannah Philpott and Mary Lou Solinas. David will be missed by his beloved dog Scout, countless friends, family, his military brothers and sisters, and all who had the great pleasure of knowing him.

Visitation was offered on Friday, April 21, 2023 from 2-9 PM at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, 2 Fremont Avenue, Park Ridge, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 11 AM in Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge Street, Newark, NJ 07104. All were asked to meet at the church. David will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 3 PM. While the family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of support, they request that no flowers be ordered or sent to the church as they will not be accepted due to space limitations. In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to the GoFundMe linked down below, to contribute to a fund to commemorate his life and honor him in a way that will allow David to continue to give back to his community well beyond his final flight. This will serve as the one and only fundraising effort sanctioned and approved by the family.
