Father James E. Curtin, retired pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Melvindale,Michigan, entered eternal life at Marywood Nursing Center in Livonia. He was 83 years old. He was born July 8, 1924 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to James and Margaret (Brady) Curtin. Fr. Curtain attended St. James Elementary and High School in Ferndale, Michigan. He graduated from Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, and furthered his studies at Mt. Saint Mary Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, and St. John Major Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 7, 1952.

Father Curtain's many assignments included serving as associate pastor at St. Ambrose, Grosse Pointe Park; St. Angela, Roseville; St. Hilary, Redford; St. Mary, Monroe; St. Pius X, Southgate; and St. Mary, St. Clair; and pastor at St. Francis of Assisi, New Haven; and St. Mary Magdalen, Melvindale, until his retirement in 1999. Father Curtin also served on the Presbyteral Council.

Fr. Curtain is survived by his siblings; Sister Rebecca Curtin, CSJ of Nazareth, Michigan, Patrick J. (Carolyn) of Ferndale, Aileen (Ernie) Littlejohn of Belen, NM and Thomas M. (Nina) of Dawsonville, GA; nieces and nephews, Lynn (Kelly) O'Meara, Patricia, Kelly Anne (Charles) Ruda, Caren (Richard) Straub and James E., III(Stacey), 3 great nephews and 3 great nieces. He was predeceased by sister, Mary Margaret Morgan and nephew, Kevin B. (Patricia) Curtin.

Father Curtin will be waked at St. Mary Magdalen Parish, 19624 Wood Street, Melvindale, with visitation on Sunday, March 9, 2008, from 2-9 p.m., with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m., and a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m.

Visitation will resume on Monday, March 10, 2008, at St. James Parish, 241 Pearson, Ferndale, from 2-9 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m.

Father Curtin's body will lie in state at St. James Parish on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, from 9 a.m. until the celebration of his funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
