The Rev. Fr. Dominic Rossi, 92, a PIME missionary and former pastor of San Francesco Catholic Church in Clinton Township, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at his residence in the Tivoli Manor in Warren. He was born Oct. 8, 1915, in Cantalice, Italy.

The Rev. Rossi was ordained a priest in 1938, receiving his first missionary assignment the following summer to Africa. He eventually served Italians sent to British-run concentration camps in Rhodesia (now South Africa) throughout World War II and until 1949.

He was later assigned to the northern region of Brazil, along the Amazon River. There he helped establish a parish church and school, which also cared for lepers in the area. He worked with the local government to provide grants to the impoverished locals known as "Carvoeiros," who produced charcoal.

As he established the new community in Brazil, he was transferred to San Francesco and with PIME's seminary in Newark, Ohio, and later taught religion at Our Lady Star of the Sea in San Pedro, Calif. He worked with PIME seminarians in Oakland, N.J., before becoming pastor of San Francesco Church in 1965.

The Rev. Rossi helped galvanize the church among Detroit's Italian-American community with a variety of social and cultural events. Due to his hard work and determination with the efforts of the dedicated parishioners, the church eventually settled at its current location in 1978.

He served as the pastor for more than 30 years. He was recognized several times for his work in the local community, being named "Man of the Year" in 1992 by the Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Commission.

The Rev. Rossi has been the chaplain of the San Francesco Missionary Orphans Club and TACOM army base. He was an avid bocce player and enjoyed being on the San Francesco Bowling League. He was a member of the Lazio Club as well as honorary memberships to many Italian groups.

He is survived by his nephews, the Rev. Fr. Bernadino, Orlando, Fiorenzo and Francesco Rossi.

He was predeceased by his parents, Bernardino and Maria Rossi; brothers, Francesco and Pasquale; and sisters, Luisa and Anna Maria.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at San Francesco Catholic Church, 22870 S. Nunneley Road (off Metropolitan Parkway, east of Gratiot), Clinton Township.
Entombment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township.

Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Saturday at Bagnasco and Calcaterra Funeral Home, 13650 E. 15 Mile (at Schoenherr), Sterling Heights. Additional visitation is 3-9 p.m. Sunday, with an 8 p.m. rosary service, and 8-10 a.m. Monday, all at the church.

Memorial contributions may be addressed to PIME.
