AUSTIN -- Floyd Earl Baxter, 84 of Austin died on March 5, 2008 at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born April 2, 1923 in Austin to Earl and Mary (Schaefer) Baxter. Floyd graduated from Austin High School and served in the Navy. He was married to Edith L. Oleson on May 3, 1946 at Austin. He worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Co. for 42 1/2 years, retiring on Oct. 9, 1984. Floyd was a member of Crane Community Chapel, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Austin Eagles clubs. He was an active person who enjoyed spending winters in Texas, fishing, camping, stock car racing, building stock cars, tinkering and making things for others.

Floyd is survived by his wife, Edith Baxter, Austin; children, Sandy Lester (Baldus) Cottage Grove, Minn., Diane Schocker, Devils Lake, N.D.; Brian (Brenda) Baxter, Clarendon, N.Y.; Kathy (Larry) Mensing, Faribault, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Floyd was preceded in death by a son; one daughter; two grandchildren; five sisters; and two brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, March 10, 2008 at Crane Community Chapel with Pastor Mark Goossen officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Cemetery. Friends may greet the family for one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
