Albert J. served in the 14th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery. He died as a result of his service with the Union Army.
Albert J. died onboard the Mississippi River Hospital Hospital Ship January from a fever.
The Painesville Telegraph dated June 22, 1865
Albert J. Abbey, son of George and Ann Abbey, of Leroy, and a member of the 14th Ohio Artillery, after participating in the taking of Atlanta and at the battle of Franklin near Nashville, and struggling with disease for months in the camp and in the hospital in New Orleans, finally started for home on a hospital boat, and on the 14th of April, died on the passage, and the place of sepulcure is unknown. Aged 21 years, 2 months and 7 days - being the second son that has fallen in the service of their country in the slaveholders unholy rebellion.
Albert, our son, we mourn for thee,
But thou has done they best for thy country.
