Foreman in a biscuit factory, David was converted at Reading, England in 1882. As a Field Officer, his love for the souls of the people caused him to be known as a "prince among soul savers". He served as Corps Officer at several U.K. corps, among them Hull Icehouse which when he left had the largest Soldiers' Roll in The Salvation Army world.
He was married to Ruth Hepzibah Babington and the couple had seven children: David E. (1886) William B. (1887) Ruth Maybury (1889), Harding Willfred (1891), Annie Ina (1898), Cecil A. (1899) and Edith C.(1902).
In later years he commanded the Army's work in Canada, South Africa and Sweden (1904-1909) and also served as Principal of the International Training Garrison in London.
In January of 1911, David and his family immigrated to Toronto, Canada. The older family members involved with the Salvation Army were on their way to a convention in London, England.
He was traveling with his wife and three adult children aboard the Empress of Ireland in second class. The entire family was lost and David's body not recovered.
