US Senator. He served in the United States Senate from the state of South Dakota from January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1979. From 1948 to 1952, he served in the United States Navy. He worked at various jobs after his military service and later earned his degree in civil engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines in 1961. He then worked as an engineer in California, before returning to South Dakota to work on the Minuteman missile silos. In 1964, he decided to go to law school and later, earned a J.D. degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1966. He went into law practice in Rapid City, South Dakota and joined the Democratic Party. In 1968, he made an unsuccessful run for the office of Attorney General of South Dakota. Two years later, he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives and was successful in the November general election. He went on to serve one term in the House before deciding to run for the United States Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Karl Mundt in 1972. He was successful in the general election that year and went on to serve one term in the Senate before stepping down in 1979. During his Senate tenure, he was the first chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. After leaving the Senate, he went back to his law practice and also was an advocate for Arab Americans.
