A corporal with the Baton Rouge City Police Department K-9 Division, Mark Anthony Beck died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, as the result of an automobile accident. He was 33, a resident of Zachary and a native of Spartanburg, S.C.

He is survived by his wife of two years, Michelle Lees Beck; a niece whom he was raising, Danae Lees, Zachary; nephew, Jacob McManus; two sons, Austin Beck and Bronson Beck, both of Walker; K-9 partner, Xander; mother and stepfather, Mary and Elridge Hidalgo, Jackson; stepmother, Mary Lou Beck, Denham Springs; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and JoAnn Lees, Zachary; sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Timmy Duhon, Prairieville; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Scott and Lisa Lees, Port Allen, and Darren Lees, Denver; numerous aunts and uncles in Louisiana and North Carolina; and special aunt, Barbara Chaney.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Beck; brother-in-law, Darrel Lees; grandparents, Roy Grant, who was former chief of police in North Carolina, Alice Walsh Beck and James Efird Beck and Carl and Louvee Wagner; aunt, Sarah Clark; and uncle, Bill Grant.

Mark was a former Denham Springs reserve officer, former Livingston K-9 officer, graduate of LSU Basic Training Academy, 2001 graduate of Baton Rouge City Police Academy, a uniform patrol officer with Baton Rouge City Police, 2001-2004, and an armed-robbery detective with Baton Rouge City Police, 2004-2007. He was a member of the Baton Rouge Union of Police Local 237, Fraternal Order of Police, US Police K-9 Association Region 10 and Baton Rouge Police Department Honor Guard.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working on his dad's truck and boat riding with his family. He also enjoyed watching his sons play sports and LSU football and tailgating with family and friends.
