Earl Ross Burg, of Felton, took his last breath on this earth and accepted the hand of his ones who have passed on before him, to begin his Eternal Life with his Lord and Savior on February 14, 2023, at 9:46 pm at his residence surrounded by those who loved him, at the age of 83. He was the loving husband of Dawn M. (Zumbrum) Burg to whom he married on his birthday, on February 18, 1991, celebrating 32 years together. He was born in Red Lion in the home he grew up in, on February 18, 1939, and was the son of the late Henry Franklin and Grace Viola (Flaharty) Burg. Earl graduated from Red Lion High School, Class of 1957. He was a United States Army Veteran, stationed in Texas at the Alamo, where he served as a medic. Earl went to Gettysburg College and to the former Eckels School of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. He worked with his father at the family-owned funeral home since the age of 16, and then he purchased the business from his father in 1984, continuing as the third generation to run the funeral home. Earl served 8 years in the Army Reserves, serving one weekend a month at Indiantown Gap. Besides the reserves and the funeral home business, the family owned and operated an ambulance service in the Red Lion and surrounding area. He helped a lot of families and often spoke of delivering several babies while transporting the mommies to the hospital. Some of the children were even given his name after birth. Earl stepped back from his full-time responsibilities at the funeral home in 2002 to spend more time on the farm that he and Dawn built. He loved the horse farm as much as he did the funeral work. Though he was not at work every day, he knew everything that was going on. He got into riding horses later in life but enjoyed it so much that he would travel and show them up and down the East Coast. He even won a Reserve National Championship class at the Paso Fino Grand Nationals in Perry, Georgia. Earl was a member of the Winterstown United Methodist Church in Felton where he was actively involved in several positions over the years. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge, Free & Accepted Mason # 649 in Red Lion, a thirty second degree mason, and Scottish Rite, he was also a member of the former Rainbow Chapter, #517 Order of the Eastern Star in Red Lion, the Vizsla Club of America, Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, York County Funeral Directors Association, and the Paso Fino Horse Association. He loved riding his motorcycle, traveling and spending time in Arizona, he has traveled to many destinations over the years, but Arizona was his favorite. Besides his wife, Dawn, he has two sons, Matthew H. Burg and his wife Heidi of Ephrata and Jonathan E. Burg and his fiancé Missy Kline of York. He was the grandfather of Joshua E. Burg (Fiancé, Nancy) and Cole J. Burg (companion Kaitlyn) both of York. Earl was the only boy in his family, leaving his two sisters, Alta M. Burg Richardson of Bluffton, SC, and Joyce Burg Melhorn of Atlanta, GA. He also leaves a brother-in-law, Dick Arnold of Blacksburg, VA, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dawn E. Burg Musser Arnold, his brother-in-law, Major General Stanton R. Musser, and his niece Kristin Musser Asbury. Viewing will be on Wednesday, February 22nd, from 6-8 pm at Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, and from 10-11 am at Winterstown United Methodist Church, 12184 Winterstown Road, Felton. A Service of Honor and Praise for Earl will begin at 11 am at the church with his pastor, Rev. Rebecca McGee, along with our very dear friend, Rev. David D. Tietje, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ in Red Lion, officiating. Burial will take place in Red Lion Cemetery, military rites offered by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion is handling the arrangements. We would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the staff of Promedica Hospice. They have been a blessing and in just a few short weeks have become like family. Their compassion and sincerity and care given to Earl and the support for our family has been very much appreciated. We can't forget to mention, his daily caregiver, Daria Hargraves, who treated and cared for him like family of her own, along with so many other family and friends, you know who you are! May God always bless each one of you. To my husband, I say "well done good and faithful servant", you have spent your life caring for and taking care of others, now, may you rest in the house of the Lord, enjoying the rewards that you have earned. My heart is broken to say "good-bye", but I rejoice to know we will meet again someday. I will always love you. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Earl's memory may be offered to Winterstown United Methodist Church, 12184 Winterstown Road, Felton, PA 17322, or to the North Hopewell-Winterstown Volunteer Fire Company, 12246 Winterstown Road, 17322.
