Betty E. Anderson, 82, passed away peacefully Feb. 21, 2008, at St. Luke's Magic Valley Regional Medical Center.
When Betty Ellen Bonning was born in Ketchum, Idaho, the town had a population of just 250. It was June 4, 1925, and her parents, Arthur and Katherine Lombardina Bonning, were thrilled to welcome a second daughter to the pioneer family.
Betty spent her childhood winters skiing and sledding, while fishing and swimming made the summer months a fun break from school. Her family stocked an icehouse with blocks of ice cut from a local pond in the winter and sold the ice to tourists in the summer. Betty kept busy helping with the family ice business, babysitting, playing with her older sister, Pearl, and hanging out with her many pets.
In about 1943, Sun Valley opened as a U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital. By then, Betty was a high school graduate and she found a job in the personnel office. It was there that she met her future husband, Theodore (Ted) Anderson, who was assigned to the personnel staff in Sun Valley after serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Pearl Harbor. Ted was a proud survivor of the Pearl Harbor bombing on Dec. 7, 1941.
Betty and Ted were married Feb. 4, 1945. They lived for a time in Boise and in Ketchum before relocating to Twin Falls in June 1953. Together, they raised three children, Leonard Anderson, Kathy Anderson Stover and Ellen Anderson Allen. Betty had seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Betty worked as a clerk at Save On Drug for 23 years and as a volunteer at the Buzz Langdon Visitor Center for eight years. She was a member of the Twin Falls Church of the Brethren. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and helped with Job's Daughters, Scouts and PTA.
Betty's special interests included music, her grandchildren, visiting with friends, and taking pictures to preserve precious moments. Betty was a caring, cheerful person who was always willing to help others. She greeted everyone with a beautiful smile and a kind word.
Betty is survived by her children, Leonard (Alice) Anderson of Twin Falls, Kathy (Paul) Stover of Twin Falls and Ellen (Tom) Allen of Boise; grandchildren, Rand (Andrea) Stover, Niki (Gonzalo) Callison, Jesse (Becca) Allen, Lesley and Kasey Allen, Shannon (Michael) Brady and Brian (Kelly) Reed; great-grandchildren, Isaac and Zack Stover, Connor Brady, Delaney, Jackson and Campbell Reed; and her niece, Arlene (Jim) Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister, Pearl Stapleton; and her niece, Marilyn Stapleton Molle.
The family would like to thank Dr. A.C. Emery for his many years of compassionate care, Dr. Stephen Schmid and the entire staff on the third floor of St. Luke's Magic Valley Regional Medical Center for their skilled care and sincere concern for Betty and her family. We also express our heartfelt thanks to the residents and staff at Woodstone Retirement Center for the friendship, love and care they extended to Betty on a daily basis.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Betty's family will greet visitors during the hour preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your charity of choice.
