Cyrus Stow Hapgood, 91, of Delray Beach, FL, and Greenwich, CT, died on Sunday, November 2, 2003 in Delray Beach, FL. He was born April 21, 1912 in Lynn, MA, the son of the late Cyrus Howard Hapgood and Edith Dow Hapgood. Cy graduated Cum Laude from Newark Academy in 1929; he was a 1933 LLB graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a 1936 graduate of Fordham University Law School in New York; he was admitted to the New York Bar the same year. He served in the United States Navy's Naval Patent Office from 1942 until 1945, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. Cy practiced patent law with the firm of Davis, Hoxie, Faithful & Hapgood in New York City from 1945 until 1983. He was President of the New York Patent Law Association from 1962 until 1963. He served on the Board of Directors for Allyn & Bacon, The Mennen Company, and The Educational Foundation of America. While at MIT, Cy was on the varsity crew team; later, he was an avid golfer as well as an accomplished crossword puzzle enthusiast and bridge player. When his children were growing up, he enjoyed boating, skiing, and bowling with them. Mr. Hapgood was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Elma Mennen, whom he married March 14, 1942, and who died in 1970; and his daughter, Guynne, who died in 1950. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Elaine Prentice Hapgood; one son, Cyrus S. Hapgood, Jr. of Chapel Hill, NC; two daughters: Candra Seley of West Palm Beach, FL, and Gay Hapgood of Leverette, MA; five grandchildren: Christopher Cyrus Hapgood of Charlottesville, VA, Matthew Eugene Hapgood of Chapel Hill, NC, Hunter Seley of West Palm Beach, FL; Brandy Blynn Mandell of Lexington, MA; and Reginald Blynn of Charleston, SC; and two great-grandchildren: Alex and Margaux Hapgood of Charlottesville, VA. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Lynn Powers Babicka, and John Powers; as well as his step-grandchildren: Shelley, Lauren, and Jon Babicka, and Barbara and James Bohart. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (TODAY), November 5, 2003 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach on Gleason Street. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, in Everett, MA.
