Charles Benard Rosberg, Sr. was born to Almina Josefina Swenson and Thomas Edgar Bennett on 16 July 1892 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA.

His parents gave him the name Charles Edward Bennett, however due to his mother dying during his infancy he was adopted and brought up by his mother's maternal aunt and uncle, Karna and Sven B. Rosberg. He was re-named Charles Benard Rosberg, and was baptized with that name in August of 1893 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Chicago. His descendants carry the name of Rosberg to this day.

Charles grew up hearing a lot of Swedish - his mother's family had immigrated from Sweden and the Rosberg's and many other older family members and neighbors still spoke their native language at home. Charles' daughter Flora Ann Rosberg recounted that when she was a child, her father and mother would sometimes use Swedish words as a "secret code" when they wanted to discuss certain things without the children understanding.

The childhood home of Charles Benard Rosberg, Sr. was 1550 N. Clark St. in the Lakeview area of Chicago, a multiple occupancy building owned by the Rosbergs (the house number was changed to 3029 N. Clark Street during a city-wide renumbering scheme in 1909). Sven Rosberg ran a tailoring business from a building built on the same lot, behind the main house.

In his earliest years, young Charlie was surrounded by his extended family: he was cared for by his great-aunt and uncle Karna and Sven, his maternal grandmother Kersti Swenson lived on the same property, and his mother's sister Jennie Peterson lived nearby with her husband and daughter. Over the years, all that changed. By the time he was 12 years old, he and Karna were the only ones left after their other family members had died or moved away.

Charles became a car mechanic and chauffeur by profession, which was an exciting new field of work back in the 1910s and 1920s, with the affordable "Model T" Ford automobile being released in 1908 when Charles was about 16 years old.

He married Lydia Lee on 25 October 1913, and together the couple had 5 children with one of their sons, Philip Raymond Rosberg, dying in infancy. Sadly, Lydia became ill and died in February of 1927. The family became dispersed for several years as the Rosberg children were cared for by various other people. Fortunately they were able to maintain communication with their father and were reunited as they grew into their teen and adult years.

Charles had a second wife, Harriet "Hattie" Johnson Beckler (a.k.a. Hedwig Johnson). They lived in Glenview, Illinois for many years. he died in 1968, at the age of 75.
