Mary Lou was a lifelong resident of Michiana. She graduated from Greene Township High School in 1946 and was the Treasurer of her class. She worked as a registered nurse at Michiana Community Hospital and various local doctor's offices before retiring in 1994. Mary Lou volunteered at the Christ Child Society, was the president of her Georgetown Homeowners Association, and a board member for Sumption Prairie Cemetery. She loved to play card games - especially euchre, bridge and pinochle. Mary Lou also loved to doing word searches, cross-stitching, traveling, and tailgating for Notre Dame home football games. Mary Lou never met a social event that she did not want to attend. Mary Lou also loved meeting people and making friends – it has been said that she has never met a stranger.
Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Gail (J. Wesley) Olds of Fort Wayne, IN; son, Alan (Glenda) Smith of Ashburn, VA; grandchildren, Matt (Emilie) Olds, Mary (Eric) Russell, Melissa Olds, William (Jessica) Olds, Kevin (Kiki) Smith, and Alison (Clint) Pouesi; eight great-grandchildren, Lucas Olds, Cooper Olds, Hattie Olds, Elodie Russell, Parker Olds, Nash Olds, Alexis Pouesi, and Penelope Smith. Mary Lou also is survived by her future great-granddaughter, Scarlett Russell. Along with her parents and husband, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Kay Metzger.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at St Patrick Catholic Church, 309 S Taylor St, South Bend, IN. Burial will follow immediately at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00pm-8:00pm on Friday, July 9th at Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd, South Bend, IN.
