ELKHART - Carol Juanita Barton, 96, of Elkhart, passed away Sunday, May 11, at Hubbard Hill Estates.
She was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Lansing, Mich., to Vernon J. and Gertrude A. (Roosa) Monasmith.
She married Andy Thomas Barton on June 20, 1937, in Middlebury. He preceded her in death Jan. 7, 1980.
Survivors include two sons, Charles C. (Ann) Barton of Englewood, Colo., and Stephen P. (Jean) Barton of Elkhart; a daughter, Glenda M. (Daryl) Hopkins of Garden City, Kan.; five granddaughters; three stepgranddaughters; three stepgrandsons; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy; a daughter, Brenda Tanner; two brothers, John and Kedric Monasmith; a sister, Charlene Miller; and a stepgranddaughter, Melanie Cabiness.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Stemm-Lawson -Peterson Funeral Home, where a procession will leave for Adamsville Cemetery. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. John Tomlonson officiating.
As a teenager, Carol went to Middlebury to live with her foster parents, Frank and Emma Jenkins. She graduated from Middlebury High School in 1936. She was a homemaker and mother and enjoyed sewing, needlepoint and painting, especially figurines. She always had flower gardens and an affinity for growing African violets. She had been a member of Church of the Brethren for many years.
