Born in Tennessee, most likely South Pittsburg, Marion County. Gussie lived most of her life in Jackson County, Alabama. She was a school teacher for about 50 years. She most always lived with her parents. She taught school for several generations of the same family in all her years of teaching. She obtained her Master's Degree from Florence State College. She never married. She was very loyal to her family and took very good care of them. Her father didn't always have steady income and Gussie paid off their bills. Even after Henry's death in 1937, there were medical bills. This took Gussie years to pay off, but she did. She continued to take care of her mother, Aunt Beatie until her death, almost 30 years after the death of her father.
After Gussie graduated high school as valdictorian of her class, her three uncles (Dyke, Bill and Robert David Newton - her mother's brothers) paid for her to go to college in Florence State in Alabama for a year. Gussie returned after the year and started teaching. Every summer, Gussie went back to college to finish her degree. This took her a number of years to complete - 1961. Just before she retired, she completed her master's degree, so that her pension check would be a higher amount for her to live on in her older age.
For a number of years after her parents deaths, Gussie lived with her sister, Betty and her husband, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Eventually, she moved into a nursing home, so as not to be a burden to them. Gussie fell and broke her hip, but managed to get over it to some degree. Gussie died at the nursing home, there in Greensboro.
Gussie was a very good person, very giving and truly cared about her family. Gussie was very much up on issues of the day politically. She was very sharp about most everything.
Her adopted brother, Jack Dennis was killed when a train hit him, leaving 6 children for his wife to raise. The baby was only 3 months old. Gussie and her family did alot to help with their raising. Gussie was just a good old soul. We all miss her.
Gussie's father, Henry Peacock was my maternal Grandmother's brother. Gussie my first cousin, once removed.
