RE: Adam Gann (about 1800–1887)

The given name "Adam" is found in the Gann family for a number of generations.

Gen: 1–The first was Adam Gann, Sr. (1733–1812) whose first wife was Jane Abel. They had a son they named Adam Gann, born in 1763 in Frederick Co., VA, who for many years was called Adam, Jr., when he and his father were both living in Washington Co., TN.

When Adam, Sr. and his second wife, Christen, moved to Jefferson Co., TN ca.1800–1802, the county clerks in Washington Co., TN ceased using "junior" for the son who remained there until 1822. No records in Washington Co., TN ever gave a middle name or an initial for this son.

Gen: 2—Adam Gann [Jr.] (1763–1836+) and his wife, Rosina Broyles (1770–ca. 1822), named their 8th son, Adam, born ca. 1800 in Washington Co., TN. This son is almost always found as just plain Adam Gann.
In 1828, Adam Gann [Jr.] was listed as Adam C. Gann in a newspaper legal notice of Cocke County, TN in the Knoxville Register regarding the forced sale of some property. In 1836, Adam C. Gann sells property in McMinn County, TN as Adam C. Gann and signs his name the same. No middle name is found in records.

Gen: 3—Adam Gann (1800–1887) married Mary Polly Lemons ca . 1831, TN. The only record found for this man with either a middle name or initial is the 1850 census in Johnson Co., MO. He is listed there as Adam C. Gann. In all other records he is found as just plain Adam Gann. He has erroneously been listed on Ancestry.com as Adam Carter Gann III. No records have ever been found providing a middle name for him.
