Professional Football Player. After a stellar career as a running back at the University of Southern California, where he won the Heisman Trophy as college football's top player in 1979, he went on to play nine seasons in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams. At USC he was a unanimous All-American in both 1978 and 1979, and was named Rose Bowl Player of the Game both years, becoming just the second player to win the award twice. He was selected 27th overall by the Browns in the first round of the 1980 NFL draft and played with the team until 1984, but had little success, rushing for only 942 total yards. After being released, he joined the Rams, under his USC coach John Robinson, and eventually turned his career around. In 1987 he led the NFL with 1,387 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, and was named Comeback Player of the Year, also earning a trip to the Pro Bowl. During his NFL career, he had 3,075 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns, as well as 114 receptions for 860 yards and 1 touchdown. He later served briefly as a USC assistant coach in 1993 when Robinson returned as head coach. White was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1990 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
