89, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. Ruth Irene (Bailey) Herman, 89, of Palm Beach Gardens, passed away peace-fully into God's care on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014. Born in Monroe Herman Township, Snyder County, Pa., on Feb. 23, 1924, she was a daughter of Martin Levi Bailey and Carrie Rebecca (Leitzel) Bailey. A 1941 graduate of Selinsgrove High School, she also graduated from the Harrisburg Business School. She was married to Marshall "Bud" Herman on Aug. 17, 1945, in Staten Island, N.Y., two days after V-J Day. "Bud" preceded her in death in 2008, ending a 62-year marriage. Ruth was employed, after graduation, as a secretary for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. In the early 1950s, Ruth was secretary to the engineer-contractor during the building of the coal-fired Pennsylvania Power and Light Co. plant in Shamokin Dam, Pa. In 1958, she began working at the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Employment Office in Sunbury, Pa., in the employment service division. For many years, she coordinated with the Job Training Partnership Act and Comprehensive Employment and Training Act, which served several central Pennsylvania counties, making job training and assistance available to area residents seeking employment. She worked in this capacity until her retirement in 1986. Ruth was an active member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Selinsgrove, since 1956 and a past church council member. She was a member of Lafayette Chapter 222, Order of Eastern Star, Selinsgrove, Pa. She was a member and past president of the Selinsgrove Junior Women's Club. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother and "Nana" who not only enjoyed her family, but her many friends. Ruth was an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling, bowling and spending time with her family. When several people were asked to describe Ruth with one word, their responses were: loving, caring, spiritual, generous, stylish, smiling, kind, sweet, and gentle . . . lucky to have known her. Ruth is survived by daughters, Brenda Campbell, of Waterloo, Iowa, and Barbara "Becky" Moll, of Tequesta, Fla. She was "Nana" to granddaughters, Cara Schreck (husband, Peter Schreck), of Manasquan, N.J., and Sarah Moll, of New York, N.Y.; and also, two great-grandsons, Adam and Van Schreck. Ruth also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marshall "Bud" Herman; and two sisters, Mary M. Musser and Grace E. Woodling. Friends will be received from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 400 N. Market S., Selinsgrove, followed by a memorial service at 3 with the Rev. Dr. Dietmar Plajer officiating.
Contributions in Ruth's memory may be made to St. Paul's UCC, 400 N. Market St., Selinsgrove, PA 17870. Ruth E. Starr, 86, Turbotville E R.
