Diary of Marjorie Sanderson June 4, 1966 We visited Bad Schwalbach. Went to Rudeshim AmRhein. Drove through Taunees Mts. to Rhine River. We saw the Mouseturn, Ruinen Ehrenfels w. Rossel. The Mousetower. Had strawberry torte & tea at café-1541 yr. built. Stopped at Rudeshein and walked down Drosselgrasse. Watched the dancing, singing & bands. June 4 Went to Kurpark in Wiesbaden for fireworks. Elephant walked tight rope over lake. Each bath has a park at the rear called a cue park. Little boats with lanterns on the lake. June 5. Visited cemetery in Wiesbaden Chapel with people who died of the plague in the 30 years war are buried. Pictures on graves. Watched memorial band for 1st and 2nd war dead. June 6 Went with Marilyn shopping June 8 Went shopping downtown Wiesbaden. June 9 Went to visit Erica Fritag. Visited Peggy Langenburg at night at The American Arms. Wiesbaden June 10 Sat. Drove to Rudesheim & took steamer to St. Goarhausen. Took train back to Rudesheim. 1 hour & half trip on river past castles. Lovely with vineyards. Half hour trip back by train.June 12 Went to "Mary Poppins" movie. June 16 Wiesbaden Opera House at the Kurpark. Fledermous Red tapestry, plush, white-gold cherubs every two feet around the horseshoe shaped balcony, chandelier little flowers like shades. June 23, 1966 Linderhof Castle. Piano, organ, gold leaf linden wood. 6 years to carve ivory chandeliers. Satin, padded embroidery by bed. Dresden China, candle brackets. Magic tables. Vases all around walls "Ludwig collected vases" Fountain shoots water on the hour. 6/12/66 Oberammegau Passion Playhouse. Started in 1633 & presented every 10 years. The Passion & Death of Jesus. Vow taken by villagers after many in the village died of the plague. Afterward legend says no more were afflicted in the village. Actor playing Christ strapped on the cross 23 minutes. One cross to large to carry. Costumes, armor, table for last supper. Each actor has 2 costumes in case of rain it is still presented. Lasts 7 / hours. 2 hour break at noon. 40 changes of scenery. Oberammergua is wood carving area. Zimmer Frei where we stayed had wood carving shop attached. Bought my woodcarving of German man & woman here. June 23, 1966 Neuschwanstein (New Swan Stone) Castle-Bavarian Alps in Allgeu, 41 miles from Garmisch. 17 years to build & started 1869. Ludwig II died before completion 1886. First Wagner performance of "Tristan" 1865, "Mostersingers","Porsifal" 1882, "Tannhauser" 1867 of Munich, 80 miles from castle. Bought swans for souvenirs. Swan was. Ludwig II identified himself with the knight of the swan, Lohengrin & had armor made. Swan used many places for decoration in the castle.3,306 ft. above sea level 13th century style. Limestone fromq uarry near by. Witlesbach family owned 1180-1918 Bavaria. Swan is the emblem of the Lords of Schwangau. June 30 Carl's Italian restaurant for dinner. Gelati moto. Cannaloni. July 1 Had dinner with Peggy at American Arms-tender loin strip steak, strawberries, cream, baked potatoes, sauces for meat & potatoes from dining room. July 3-walked to Kurpark. Listened to concert off Viennese music. Saw swans, baby ducks, fish jump for bread. Gold fishpond with water lilies. Had cake 7 coffee at Blum Hotel. Window shopped in arcade of opera house. July 4 double rainbow.July 9 1966 Took the Bergbahn to Neroberg. Only water driven railway in the world. You hear the water being released when car gets to bottom of the hill. Visited Russian Chapel with 5 gold towers. Burial place of Duchess Elizabeth-niece of Czar Nicolas is buried in the church. No music or bell so as not to wake the sleeping duchess, 19 years old. Russian Major-General buried in the old Russian cemetery died in War of 1812. 3,000 Russian nobles lived in Wiesbaden before 1914, worshipped and were buried in church yard. Eye of God in chapel. Had torte & coffee at café overlooking view of Opelbad & Wiesbaden. July 9 Sat. Shopped with Marilyn & Dana for lederhosen. Visited Market Kirche 7 Catholic Church downtown Wiesbaden. July 10-Sunday walked down to Kurgarten-visited the new museum & saw Rochester display from museum of Indians on exchange for 2months. Porcelain & painting in cave of bison from France. Saw the painting of "The Cark Sharks", original July 13 Took tour of Wiesbaden by tour bus. Visited Neroberg & a champagne factory. The grapes come from Germany, North Africa, France and occasionally from Hungary. They are blended for uniform flavor & quality ages/year with yeast in extra heavy bottles. Then yeast is removed. Wine is poured into vats & a dosage added which freezes the yeast. It is removed & rebottled in thin bottles, kept for 3 months. At Keller Skanlein champagne factory at village of Schierstein. Wine cellar was built in 1884. The first family of owners had no heirs so they sold to Dr. Oetker. Saw the house on Rhine River where Wagner composed the "Meistersingers" at Schierstein. Had barbecued chicken dinner at neighbors-Connie & Bill Cogger. July 15 Walked to Sonnenberg for breakfast coffee & sweetrolls. Bought ivory pentane at Air force Base hospital. July 16 Went to Dortmunger for dinner. July 24 Went for a ride in Taunus Mts. Stopped in fields above Keoftel. Had torte at Idstein. Castle made into boy's school. July 26-had dinner with Peggy at Schutzenhaus near Sonnenberg. Saw two baby deer Dear antlers decorated the interior. July 30 Had dinner at Matter Engles Restaurant-pork chops in orange sauce Crepe suzettes lemon orange sugar cubes butter cognac. Went to Kurpark for Viennese Concert by Viennese Regiment. Clapping to music & waving hanky's while they sway. Spielbank Café.
