Obituary:

Pioneer Gone
Nathan P. Reed Died Of Dropsy Yesterday
Was Very Active and a Highly Respected Citizen
Nathan P. Reed, a resident of Lansing for many years and one of Michigan's pioneers, died at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 417 Pennsylvania Ave. North. He had been in feeble health for the past three years, but since the first of May has suffered frightfully from dropsy. He was not able to lie down one minute of the time. Mr. Reed was very industrious and active and last Tuesday, after a night of excruciating pain, he insisted upon walking out into the yard. He was a splendid man in his home, noble in principle and kind to everyone. For years he has been known as "Grandpa Reed."
He was born Nov. 19, 1816, in Massachusetts, and moved to Jefferson Co., N.Y., with his parents when 13 years old. At the age of 17 he came to Michigan alone, bought a farm near Salem, which he paid for by working by the day. Later he sent for his father and mother. He removed to Clinton Co. in 1833 and Jan. 16, 1840, was married to Miss Martha Cronkite of Riley. In 1872 he came to this city to reside. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. E.W. Perrin of Northville, and four sons, John and E.L. Reed of this city; Riley Reed, Clinton Co., and Milo Reed, Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Phoebe Francis and Mrs. Nancy Brooks of Portland, and two brothers, Hiram Reed of Portland and Charles Reed of Hastings. Five great grandchildren also survive him.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at his late home and interment will take place at Mt. Hope cemetery.
