George M. Arnold aged 57 years, well known representative of Preble county in the General Assembly, a native and lifelong resident of Jefferson township, died suddenly of a stroke of apoplexy Sunday evening at his home in New Paris. His death came as a great shock not only to members of his immediate family, but also to a legion of friends in the county and other parts of the state. He had served one term most acceptably in the Legislature and was a candidate for re-election. During his tenure of office he worked assiduously for the interest of Preble county, and was responsible for the saving from practical abandonment Fort St. Clair Park and the Monroe township schools, which were in financial straits. His record in the Legislature was an enviable one and there is no doubt that he would have been again chosen for the office by a substantial majority.

He was born April 6, 1879, on a Jefferson township farm, where he lived for 25 years. He attended the old Greenwood school until the first high school was built in the township. He graduated from high school in 1899 and the next year attended the University of Kentucky at Lexington, where he received his liberal arts degree.

He then spent the next fifteen years as a salesman for the International Harvester Company and the next ten years with the Armour Fertilizer Company. During these connections he had a wide experience with business men and farmers and he made legions of friends. He was a lifelong Republican and was ever enthusiastic as a party member.

For a long time he engaged in the real estate and insurance business in New Paris. He had served as president of the Jefferson township library board and was a member of the first board of public affairs in New Paris and also headed the business men's association. He served on the county Republican central committee for many years. He was a member of the Men's Brotherhood of the Methodist church.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Eagles lodges. Two meetings scheduled to be held in New Paris Tuesday evening were indefinitely postponed because of Mr. Arnold's death. The Tuesday club was to have met at the home of William F. Engle, and the Republican Women's club at the home of Mrs. John W. Diggs.

He is survived by his wife; Maude A. Bower Arnold; two daughters, Mrs. Beverly Northrop and Miss Mary Arnold, both of New Paris; two brothers, John Arnold of New Paris and William Arnold of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Katherine Sharkey of Eaton, and Mrs. Emily Jane Frame, and one grandchild, Miss Patricia Northrop.

Funeral services were conducted this Wednesday afternoon at the Kessler Funeral Home, C.R. Coblentz officiating. Burial was in Spring Lawn cemetery. The services were largely attended.

A special delegation appointed by the speaker of the House of Representatives attended the funeral. In the group were W.H. Williams, of Greenville; Representative Van Nees, of Piqua; William McCollough, of Troy; Ora Munger and Jesse Gilbert of Montgomery county, Arthur Hamilton, Warren county and Dr. McChesney, of Greene county.
