Lillian was an instructor of English at the Colored Normal school in Nashville. She was married to Noah Walker Ryder, a professor of Music there and they are the parents of Walker Ware, Jane Emma Lee and Noah Francis Ryder. Lillian fell ill and despite treatments in two sanatariums and the Hubbard Hospital her health continued to deteriorate. She had to give up teaching. Despondent she chose to end her life by shooting herself on 21 Feb. Her husband found her when he came home for lunch.
Her eldest son went on to become a school teacher and principal. Her daughter became a school teacher. Her younger son became a composer.
