She was born Lone Emily Bryant and was described as "the Black Marilyn Monroe" who achieved fame in the late 1940s and 1950s as a theater and nightclub performer. According to "Ebony" magazine she was one of the five most beautiful black women in the world, she was also one of the first to be fêted as a sex symbol in the mainstream and predominantly white media. She was also considered "The bronze blonde bombshell" by Time. A documentary entitled "Joyce Bryant: The Lost Diva" is in the process.
