John was eight years old during the flood of 1939. His family home was washed away and they barely escaped. He began working at a young age hauling lumber. J. C. managed the Sinclair and the Red Head gas stations and was a road foreman for the State Highway Department in Rowan County. He completed his work career as a log scaler for J. C. Wells & Sons for over 30 years and Fannin Industries for 10 years.

J. C. was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morehead. He enjoyed singing and was well known for his beautiful voice.

His time of death was 11:03 pm.
