Mrs. May F. Abel
Services for Mrs. May F. Abel, 104, of Parkview Gardens Care Center will be noon Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with burial in the Fairview Cemetery.
Mrs. Abel died Sunday at St. Francis Hospital. She was born Feb 2, 1876 in Waterloo. She married George Abel in 1894 in Waterloo. He died in 1914.
Mrs. Abel was the grandmother of five Waterloo men who became a national symbol of sacrifices Americans made during World War II.
Her daughter was Mrs. Thomas Sullivan, who was the mother of the five Sullivan brothers who died when their ship, the USS Juneau, was sunk off the Solomon Islands in November of 1942. Mrs. Sullivan died in 1972.
Survivors include three great-grandsons and a great-great-grandson.
There will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at O'Keefe and Towne Funeral Home.
