Zola Smith, 93 passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at American House Assisted Living in Westland, MI. Zola Marie Weyer was born March 20, 1919 in Imlay City. She was the daughter of Earl and Carrie Weyer. She grew up in Imlay City and graduated from Imlay City High School, class of 1936. She went on to attend County Normal School in 1937. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1948. She married Ralph M. Smith on October 23, 1948 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He passed away on January 19, 2003. Zola was a school teacher for 32 years at the Webster Road School, Blacks Corners Road Country School, Lapeer Schools, Ferndale Schools, and Imlay City Schools. She was a member and past president of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, and past president of the Imlay City Historical Association (formerly the New Era Club). Zola is survived by her daughter: Carolyn Sue Pearson of Canton; sons: Dale Allen Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana and Brian R. Smith of Naperville, Illinois; grandchildren: Sean Smith, Adam Smith, and Michelle (Chris) Costa; and sister-in-law: Eileen Weyer. She was preceded in death by her husband: Ralph Smith; parents: Earl and Carrie Weyer; brothers: John Weyer and Lee Weyer; and sister: Gladys Sellers. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2013 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City. Reverend Don Keller will officiate. Burial will follow at Imlay Township Cemetery. The family will be available for visiting 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home of Imlay City.
