Politician. He was a British Tory Politician and Member of the Privy Council. Born in Rockfleet, County Mayo, Ireland, the son of John Arbuthnot of Rockfleet, he became Member of Parliament for East Loe in 1795, and Under Foreign Secretery and Ambassador Extroardinary to Constantinople in 1804 to 1807. In 1799, he married Marcia Mary Anne, who was lady-in-waiting to the Princess of Wales, later Caroline of Brunswick, since 1795. The couple had four children, which included, General Charles Arbuthnot and Marcia Arbuthnot, who later married William Cholmondeley, 3rd Marquess of Cholmondeley. He also served as Secretary to the Treasury from 1809 to 1823, as first Commissioner of Woods and Forests from 1923 to 1827 and in 1828, as the Duchy of Lancaster. He was a good friend of Arthur Wellesey (Duke of Wellington), to whom Charles wife, Harriet, became a regular hostess at the Duke's residence, Apsley House.
