Elizabeth (Betty) Nienstedt, mother of Archbishop John Nienstedt, entered eternal life January 31, 2008, seven weeks after the death of her husband, John, of 65 years, and two days after her 89th birthday. The couple raised six children in the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. As the children grew older, Betty Nienstedt returned to school for her master's degree in teaching, then worked as a kindergarten and first-grade teacher to help pay for her children's college educations.

A devoted Catholic, she prayed the rosary and attended Mass daily. "She was the inspiration behind my priestly vocation," Archbishop Nienstedt said in a Feb. 1 statement.

Betty Nienstedt volunteered for many years with Pregnancy Aid, Inc., a Detroit-based organization that assists pregnant women. She was a gifted seamstress who made clothing for her children when they were growing up, and later made quilts and baby clothes for Pregnancy Aid. A week before she died, she donated 15 hand-sewn baby bibs to the organization.

Faith and family were the most important things in her life, said her daughter, Mary Beth Nienstedt of Portage, Mich., a nurse practitioner who cared for her mother in recent years.
"She would go to the ends of the earth for us," Mary Beth Nienstedt said. "In these later years, I wanted to give that back. She inspired me."

Beloved wife of the late John C. Dear Mother of Barbara Jean (Mike) Buttell, Archbishop John Nienstedt, Mary Beth Nienstedt, Richard (Patricia) Nienstedt, Michael Nienstedt and Corinne Nienstedt. Loving Grandmother of Katie Buttell, Sarah Buttell, David Nienstedt, Erica Nienstedt, Nancy Nienstedt and Brian James Nienstedt. Dear Sister of Barbara (Eugene) Arjeski, Jean Dalton, and Leo (Easter) Kennedy. Dear Sister-in-Law of Virgina Nienstedt and Ed Rashid.

Funeral: Monday, February 4, 2008. Instate 9 AM until time of Mass at 10 AM at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms.

**Memorare**

Remember, O most Gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful, O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen

**Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen**
