Daisy Turner Garlock, a direct descendant of President Herbert Hoover, entered eternal life at the age of 103. She was born into a family with four brothers and four sisters. In 1926 she graduated from Howard College (now Samford University)in Homewood, Alabama, a Birmingham suburb, with degrees in English and botany. She was then hired by the YWCA. After training in New York City, she worked first in Clearwater, Florida, and then in Akron, Ohio, where she met her first husband, Samuel C. Turner, an insurance executive. They were married in 1933 and moved to Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in 1940. They had a daughter, Janet, and she now has a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

During her years in Grosse Pointe, she was an active member of the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, where, among many activities, she served as a member of the Session and co-chaired the fair in 1958. She held positions in many volunteer organizations including the American Red Cross and the Girl Scouts. She was an avid golfer and duplicate bridge player at the Country Club of Detroit.

After her husband died in 1972, she moved to Sarasota, Florida, where she continued her volunteer activities and her enthusiasm for golf and bridge. She was a charter and active member of the Siesta Key Chapel. As a widow living on Siesta Key, she met Lyle Garlock, a fellow key resident. She and Lyle were married in 1975, when she was 84. They were the first couple to be wed at the new Siesta Key Chapel. Into her 90s, she was an avid golfer at Mission Valley Golf Club and duplicate bridge player at the Sarasota Yacht Club and Bay Village. When she no longer played golf, she enjoyed watching it on TV. She was the sole registered Republican in a family of Democrats, and looked forward to discussing politics with family members.

Her husband, Lyle Garlock, died in 1981.

On January 8, 2008, Daisy was joined by relatives, friends and fellow Bay Village residents in a gala celebration of her 103rd birthday.

Daisy is survived by her daughter, Janet Duke of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter Amy Rider of Richmond, Va.; great-grandson Paul Spencer Rider; sister Elizabeth Hearne of Sun City, Ariz.; stepdaughter Kay Croft of Dallas, Texas; three stepgrandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Bay Village. Arrangements were by Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel.
