He was born Oct. 20, 1916, in Weyerhaeuser, to Merle and Wilma (Butcher) Calkins.
Norman married Norma McCarty on March 15, 1943, in Abilene, Texas.
He grew up in the Weyerhaeuser area. He was a medic in the U.S. Army during WWII, receiving a bronze star.
He moved to Rockford, Ill., in 1959 and returned to the Chetek area in 1980.
He was a carpenter in the Rockford area, building schools, libraries, churches, a nuclear power plant in Byron, Ill., and other industrial carpentry.
Norman enjoyed dancing, fishing and playing cards with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Norma of Chetek; two daughters, Sharon (James) Dennis of Omaha, Neb., and Maxine (Mickey) Smith of Rockford, Ill.; two sisters, Maxine (Norman) Kawell of Bloomer, and Edith Nix of Chetek; three granddaughters, April, Kelly and Jennifer; four great-grandchildren, Jesse, Jacob, Joseph and Taylor; several nieces and nephews; and half brother and half sisters, Eddie, Laurie, Becky and Wendy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Patricia; and one brother, Joseph.
A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at Burnham-Ours Funeral Home in Chetek, with Father Ron Levra officiating. Burial was at St. Boniface Cemetery in Chetek.
VFW honors were accorded at the funeral home.
