Obituary: Spencer, J. Elwood: On Oct 23, 1982, of Kissimmee, FL, formerly of Spencerport, NY. He is survived by 3 sons, Gilbert of AZ, Donald of MT, Douglas of MI, 1 daughter Geraldine Marsh of MI; 8 grandchildren; several great grandchildren: 3 brother, Milford, Keith, and James Spencer. Service and interment at the convenience of the family. In John H. Hawkin's book, The Hawkins Family, 1764-1999, he writes: "Elwood wanted to become a plumber, so went to Chicago to attend a plumbers trade school. While there he became sick and had to leave school. He came to my parents' home and lived there until he got well. After his recovery he worked for Dad for a year or so and helped show Father's hogs at the fairs. Elwood became acquainted with Zoa Belcher who lived with her parents, Steve and Dora, about three quarters of a mile south of Rollin. Zoa and Elwood were married in the front room of her family home about 1915; I remember attending the wedding. They moved to Spencerport, NY about 1916. Zoa's parents moved to Hudson from Rollin about 1921 or 1922 and lived across from the Congregational Church. Burdett Peebles and I stayed there on very bad winter nights when he and I were going to high school in Hudson. Elwood and Zoa had a daughter, Gerry, who was born in Spencerport. She often came to Hudson during the summer to visit her grandparents and my parents. During these visits she became acquainted with Harold Marsh of Hudson. They were married in about 1936, and lived in Hudson until after World War II. They often visited Doris and me when we lived in the two-story house. Gerry and Harold subsequently moved to Ypsilanti where he established the Marsh Plating Company, which has been very successful, and has been run by their sons and now their grandsons. Gerry and Harold retired and lived in Zephyrhills, FL during the winter and I often visited them there. Most recently, Gerry and Harold had separated and Gerry has been living in Ypsilanti. Harold died very quickly 23 Dec 1997. Gerry returned to FL to get a few things and sell the house." John H. Hawkins
