OBITUARY: Ted Backs passed away at Kansas City Hospice House on December 25th, 2009. He was born August 16th, 1937 in Lockwood, Missouri. He graduated from MU Columbia with a BS and MS in Education, a minor in Mathematics, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Ted was an elementary school principal in Lockwood, Missouri. He came to Shawnee Mission School District in 1962 and taught elementary, supervised computer instruction, and was an N.E.A. member for 37 years. Ted was known by his students for having exotic animals in his classroom, and was a SYSOP in every building he taught. He married Sandy Shubert in 1976. Some of his hobbies included camping, beekeeping, gardening, wine making, and he was also known as a lawn guru, rose and dahlia cultivator, and master meat smoker.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Murphy and Grace Backs. He is survived by his children Mitzi Scotten, Monte Scotten, Deidre Backs (Matt Pewthers) and Erika Backs; also his sisters, Peggy Roberts (Dick Roberts), Becky Backs and Cathy Backs; one granddaughter, Moira Espe-Backs; his wife of 33 years, Sandy Backs; and many friends, neighbors, colleagues and family members whose lives were enhanced by Ted's generosity and kindness. We are now at a loss when it comes to fixing anything, including our cars.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, at 8201 Metcalf on Sunday, December 27th. The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, December 28th at Trinity Lutheran Church at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Nall. Burial in Lenexa City Cemetery, Lenexa, Kansas.
