He was born on March 11, 1932 in Flat Rock, IL to Richard Raymond Steffy and Emma Marie Young Steffy. He started school at Union School before moving with his family to Robinson when he was 7 years old. His family attended Flat Rock Baptist Church, and Gerald accepted Christ at a tent revival at age 10. He was baptized at Flat Rock Baptist Church. Gerald felt the calling of ministry at 17 years old, and served numerous churches during his many years of service.
He graduated from Robinson High School in 1950, and attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. It was at SIU that Gerald met Betty Lou Hoxsey, and they were married June 1, 1952 in Carbondale. She survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Vicki Lynn Steffy; son, Gerald Ray Steffy, II; and sister, Carol Ann Russell.
Entombment will take place at Swan Lake Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
