Thomas Jefferson Adams, retired vice president and credit manager of The Times-Picayune Publishing Corp., died Friday after an extended illness. He was 79.

Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Monday at the Tharp-Sontheimer Funeral Home at 4117 S. Claiborne Ave. Interment will be in Gloster, Miss.

Mr. Adams was a native of Amite County, Miss., and lived in Gloster until moving to New Orleans in 1921. He joined the Times-Picayune Publishing Corp. that year as a member of its circulation department.

He was appointed assistant credit manager in 1923 and promoted to credit manager in 1926, a post he held until his retirement in December 1974. He was named a company vice president in 1952.

He was an organizer of the Times-Picayune Credit Union and served as its president for six years. He was also a director of the company and served on its advisory board.

Before coming to New Orleans, Mr. Adams attended Mississippi College where he played quarterback for the football team, guard and captain on the basketball team and catcher on the baseball team.

Mr. Adams held a bachelor of commercial science degree from Bowling Green University and attended Loyola Law School. He also taught courses for Tulane University's University College.

He was past president of the New Orleans Credit Men's Association, a past director of the New Orleans Retailer's Credit Bureau and served as a director of the National Association of Credit Management's national committee.

Mr. Adams was also a founder and past director of the Advertising Media Credit Executives Association International.

He was a member of the Mississippi College Alumni Association board of directors and served as president of the group. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was vice president of its board of trustees.

Mr. Adams served in the U.S. Army in World War I and on foreign duty with the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant in World War II.

He was honored with the Holder Fellow Award by the National Institute of Credit and was named Credit Executive of the Year in 1965 by the New Orleans Credit Men's Association and in 1972 was named Newspaper Credit Executive of the Year.

He was an avid golfer, held membership in several Carnival organizations and was active in Shriner and Masonic activities.

He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Smith; one daughter, Mrs. Samuel Gatewood Wellborn of Wilmington, Del.; and three grandchildren.
