Hedge Fund Manager, Philanthropist. Best known as the founder of Tiger Management and mentoring a generation of savvy hedge fund managers known as Tiger Cubs. Robertson was born and grew up in Salisbury, North Carolina and attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1955 and served 2 years in the United States Navy. He began his career as a stockbroker for Kidder, Peabody & Co and later served as the chief executive officer of Webster Management Corporation until 1978. After a year-long sabbatical, he founded the hedge fund Tiger Management in 1980 where he averaged 25% returns annually. He closed his fund in 2000 and returned money to investors after he felt he no longer understood the financial markets. He was a philanthropist who donated over $2 billion in his lifetime to education, environmental and medical research.
