Major League Baseball Umpire. In his twenty year career as an umpire he officiated 3068 regular season games (1961, 1963-1982) in the American League. Of those 3068 games fifteen were American League Championship Series games in 1970, 1973, 1976 and 1980, 27 World Series games in 1968, 1972, 1978 and 1982 and four All-Star games in 1963, 1970, 1975 and 1981. He wore uniform number 1 after the American League adopted uniform numbers in 1980 until his retirement in 1982. When he retired from the field he served as a supervisor of American League umpires until being fired from his position after the 1985 season. He was also a supervisor of the Baseball Umpire Development program until the 1994 season.
