Marker engraved "Uncle"

son of Dr. Charles Remick Stewart and Mary Louisa GRIFFITH Stewart.

m: Allie Adele Nobles in Kaufman County Tx. (Also seen as Allie HATFIELD) - divorced
ch:
-Leonard Frank Stewart 6/6/03-11/29/91
-Eva Myrtle Stewart 3/25/02-

After her divorce Allie moved with the children from TX. to Springfield Mo where she was registered as a "poor person". The children were placed in an orphanage. When Allie remarried she attempted to regain her children but the records had burned.

An interesting note from a great grandchild of Charles follows:
"Charley W. Stewart s/o Dr. Charles R. & Mary Louiza Griffith was my paternal great grandfather. The "son" mentioned on his memorial was my grandfather whose name was Leonard Frank Stewart 6/6/03-11/29/91. Frank was born to Charlie & Allie Adele Nobles-Stewart in Coffman County Tx. Charlie & Allie were married 4/22/01 in Coffman County, TX. A daughter; Eva Myrtle Stewart 3/25/02 was also born to the union. In Tx. where Charlie was a farm worker, the family fell apart; Allie & the children returned to Springfield, MO. where unproductive attempts were made by the courts to locate Charlie. Allie thus presented herself to the courts as a "poor person" & the children became wards of the state of MO. They were placed in the orphans home. Allie re-married & returned for her children to learn that the orphanage & its records had burned. Myrtle had been adopted by a family named Lewis from Bend, OR. She & Allie were not re-united until, Myrtle had a family of her own. Frank had been "taken in" by a rural family. Allie happened to be changing trains at a local stop when she saw him with his "adoped" minister father. Frank eventually located Myrtle. Grandpa Stewart and Frank physically appeared very similar. Frank's personality however was strong & determined like his mother & by all that any of us knew, his personal appearance was all he shared with Charlie though they possessed a commendable relationship. We all visited Grandpa Stewart and Uncle Ben regularly in their home in Clinton. I never saw Grandpa Stewart with teeth. Grandpa Frank said he kept them under his pillow with the lemon drops he always shared with us kids when we visited."

In the early 1940s, Charley and Ben, his brother, lived in the front of a house in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri. Their mother, Mary Louisa, lived in the back part of the house.

Charley's middle name was "William." On the 1880 U.S. Census, Charley appears as "Charles W." It is unclear why his tombstone is Charles E.

Charley appears on the 1895 city census for Clinton, Henry County, Missouri, and on the 1900 U.S. Census for Jasper County, Missouri, as stepson in the household of his mother and her second husband, Thomas J. Boston.
