Merle W. Rowlett, 76, of Madison, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison.

He was born Nov. 18, 1931, in Bedford, Ky., the son of Frank L. and Grace Staples Rowlett. He resided his early life in Trimble County, Ky., moving to Switzerland County when he was 14. He was a 1950 graduate of Vevay High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. After the war, he worked for a short while for HB Neal Salvage in Osgood. He and his wife moved to their farm in 1968 and enjoyed raising tobacco, corn, soybeans and beef cattle. He had been employed for 39 years at the Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corp., retiring as a maintenance supervisor in 1994. He was also a certified welder and electrician. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church since 1971 and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher, and had served as Sunday school superintendent as well. He was a member of the Smyrna Township Advisory Board, the Neaville's Grove Association, Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion, had served as the president of the Jefferson County Bluegrass Association and was also in charge of its sound system. He enjoyed singing and playing bluegrass and had participated in the Glory Bound Bluegrass and Gospel group, playing stand up bass. He had also sung tenor and played guitar for the Blue Creek Bluegrass group. He enjoyed singing with his wife at various churches and in his spare time enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding four-wheelers, music and whittling.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Delores Powers Rowlett, whom he married May 10, 1952; one son, Stephen Rowlett of Madison; one daughter, Melanie Renschler of Madison; two sisters, Alma Ruth Scott of Bedford, Ky., and Norma Watson of Milton, Ky.; one brother, Graham Rowlett of O'Brien, Fla.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Anthony Rowlett.

The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens. Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion conducted full military honors at the grave.
