This company was the first Iowa boys on the field going to a detour of the first regiment and was discharged the following winter on account of sickness. He went back to the battlefield and drove a government train until June 1862 when he enlisted in the third Iowa regiment at Helena, Arkansas. The old fighting third Iowa Saul much service and he still recalled the battles at La Grange, Arkansas, May 1, 1863 where to horses were shot from under him during the battle. At Caplo, at Vicksburg and Knoxville, and at Little Rock, Arkansas, and after breaking camp he just by chance found his brother John, supposedly dead and had been carried outside the tent and covered for dead. On examining it was found he was still alive [he was revived and lived to the age of 90]."
