My grandfather.

What little family information I have will be replaced later, when I can find his obituary; I know he had several brothers and sisters. I will also add his full obituary.

Served willingly in WWII and earned at least one Purple Heart (I believe it might have been two) and several other medals.

Had a first marriage that ended in divorce; produced two daughters. Married the second time to my grandmother, Doris Mae Hancox (nee Zimmerman). That union produced a son in 1956 and a daughter in 1958 (my mother).

Worked at Knapheide Manufacturing for many, many, many years.

Succumbed to lung cancer days after my mother's 35th birthday and about a month before I turned 7.

Survived by his son Michael, a daughter-in-law Angie, their children Joseph, Adam, and Katie, a daughter Suzi, her daughter Kayleigh and Kayleigh's husband Colin, and two great-grandsons.

I barely remember him. He died far too young at 73, and never got to meet his great-grandsons.

"Amos W. Hancox, 73, of _________, retired Knapheide Manufacturing foreman, died at 5:50 a.m. Monda (March 15, 1993) in his home.
Born Dec. 7, 1919, in Colchester, Mr. Hancox was a son of Fred A. and Edith May Watts Hancox. He married Doris M. Zimmerman March 8, 1952, in Quincy. She died Nov. 23, 1989.
Mr. Hancox was employed by Knapheide Manufacturing for 33 years, retiring as a foreman in 1982. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 37, Veterans of Foreign Wars 5129, Disabled American Veterans, Westview Men's Club and South Side Boat Club.
Survivors include a son, Michael A. Hancox of Quincy; a daughter, Susan Hancox of Quincy; three sisters, Mrs. Karl (Eileen) Rolls of Sarasota, Fla., Mrs. Kenneth (Clara D.) Moran of Colchester, and Mrs. Howard (Darlene) Jarvis of Macomb; and four grandchildren, Kayleigh, Joseph, Adam and Katie Hancox, all of Quincy.
Mr. Hancox was preceded in death by a brother, Howard.
Services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Chaplain Susan Bays. Burial with military rites by American Legion Post 37 will be in Sunset Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday and until time of services Thursday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kayleigh Hancox Educational Fund."
