Jack was the son of Roy Donavan and Margaret H. Sheer of Nebraska.
Jack received his BS degree from Utah State University and a master's degree from the University of Utah in geology. While at USU, he met and married Annette Gassman Bickmore. They lived and traveled in several states during his employment as a geologist with Amerada Oil Company. From that marriage came two children: Christine Ann Donavan, and John William (Maurine) Donavan; and later, five grandchildren- Jennifer Donavan (deceased), Michelle (Jon) Raym, Kelley (Jeremy) Howard, Scott (Mandy) Donavan, and Jordan William Donavan plus five great-grandchildren at the time of Annette's death.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was stationed at San Diego, CA.
Jack died an untimely death at the age of 32 from Hodgkin's disease.
