"His (Jesse W. Bartee) father, Rev. James T. Bartee, was a member of the North Alabama conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He began his ministry in 1848 and preached for forty-eight years. His circuit at one time extended from New Market to Guntersville, Ala., a distance of fifty miles, covered now by about twelve ministers. He was both station and circuit minister, and filled many pulpits in Tennessee and Alabama. In those early days his mode of travel was on horseback and in a buggy. His most marked characteristic was the ability to present the truth glowing with life and light. He was postmaster at Lowe, Ala., through two administrations for fifteen years. He went to his reward in 1896, at the age of seventy-nine."
